The maitake mushroom (Grifola frondosa), also known as the common rattlesnake mushroom, is an Asian edible mushroom that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries due to its many health-promoting properties.

In a clinical study, researchers investigated the effect of maitake extracts on cholesterol levels in rats with elevated blood lipid levels. The results showed that the animals fed with maitake extracts had a significant reduction in LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol), while healthy HDL cholesterol remained stable. These results show that maitake can also contribute to the prevention of cardiovascular disease.
