Iron is one of the most popular dietary supplements - and rightly so! The essential trace element supports the body's oxygen supply and, in particular, the transportation and distribution of oxygen. Iron can therefore indirectly ensure that our muscles and organs can absorb enough oxygen and utilize it optimally.
➤ Would you have guessed that it is estimated that around two billion people worldwide are affected by iron deficiency?
A glance in the mirror quickly reveals whether it makes sense to have the iron levels in your blood checked: Persistent dark circles under the eyes are just one of the many signs that the iron levels in the body are depleted. As such a deficiency, in addition to symptoms such as persistent tiredness also have devastating consequences such as anaemia and anemia we advise you not to let it get that far in the first place and to take our iron capsules at an early stage!
Iron deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency in the western world. The frontrunners here are the USA. But iron deficiency is also very common in Europe: In fact 10 % of the population are affected. At 20 % even more frequently.
An iron deficiency, which in the worst case can lead to anemia, restricts oxygen transport within the body.
This leads to the following symptoms, among others:
The main reason for an iron deficiency is usually insufficient intake of the essential mineral through the diet. However, there are a number of other factors that can lead to an iron deficiency, such as
➤ Would you have guessed that around one in five women of childbearing age suffers from an iron deficiency?
Why do women in particular belong to the risk group?
In addition to older people, girls and women between the ages of 12 and 49 years have a significantly higher risk of developing an iron deficiency.
Due to the increased blood loss during menstruation, the body has to produce more blood. As iron is a component of the red blood pigment haemoglobin, it plays an important role in both blood formation and oxygen transport, which means that girls and women simply have a higher requirement.
The organism of pregnant women in particular requires significantly higher blood quantities and therefore also more iron. This is because it has to provide for the baby as well as prepare the body for the birth.
Data from the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that in the group of girls and women of childbearing age between 12 and 49 years of age approx. 9 % already suffer from an iron deficiency. Women who develop anemia due to iron deficiency during the first two trimesters of pregnancy also have a twice as high a risk of premature birth and a three times the risk of giving birth to an underweight child.
In addition to the typical symptoms associated with iron deficiency, older people can also suffer from other serious complications associated with anemia can occur. These include, for example, a reduction in physical strength and an associated increased risk of falls and accidents.
In fact, we need less iron overall from the age of 50. Although ageing itself does not necessarily lead to an increased iron requirement, there are certain factors that can nevertheless increase the nevertheless increase the risk of age-related iron deficiency:
The trace element iron performs various functions in the human body:
➤ Incidentally, the daily iron requirement for adolescents and adults is between 10 and 15 mg and for children between 8 and 10 mg Iron.
Alongside hormonal disorders or stress, nutrient deficiencies are among the most common causes of hair loss. In particular, a potential iron deficiency should always be taken into account when problems with hair loss or poor hair growth occur.
Iron deficiency is usually associated with symptoms such as paleness, tiredness, anaemia or concentration problems. What many people don't know, however, is that hair loss can be a symptom of iron deficiency even before the other symptoms are noticeable. This is because with an iron deficiency, the hair follicles in particular also suffer from the lack of nutrients, which has a negative effect on the normal hair growth cycle and can lead to excessive hair loss.
The good news? If the cause of hair loss is iron deficiency, you can quickly remedy this with our iron capsules.
Watch out: Although there are also vegetarian and vegan foods that contain iron, the trace element from these sources is much less well absorbed by the body. This simply means that vegans and vegetarians cannot absorb sufficient amounts of iron from their food - even if they get the recommended daily amount of iron. A deficiency is then inevitable.
➤ Did you know that taking vitamin C also improves iron absorption? This is precisely why Herbano iron capsules contain additional vitamin C and score points for their high bioavailability.
When you start taking iron capsules, you may experience milder side effects, especially at the beginning, such as
If you take other food supplements, it is important to pay attention to the interactions that can occur, especially when taking minerals such as calcium or magnesium at the same time. These supplements inhibit the absorption of iron, so they should be taken separately from the iron capsules and with sufficient time between them.
In addition, the so-called iron inhibitors must also be taken into account. These are compounds such as polyphenols and phytates, which are found in coffee, tea and dairy products, for example. They also inhibit the absorption of iron, which is why foods containing these substances should not be taken together with the capsules.
Taking these instructions into account, iron supplements are generally very well tolerated.
