Omega 3 is extremely important for our general health. It helps to fight inflammation in our body and is essential for a healthy heart, eyes and memory. It is also particularly important during pregnancy for the proper development of the child.
So what can you do to cover your omega 3 requirements?
Omega 3 from fish, fish oil or algae oil? - It depends!
Fatty cold-water fish contain a lot of the important omega 3 fatty acids. This means that you could theoretically cover your omega 3 requirement through your diet alone. In reality, however, this usually looks different due to various factors:
This is what makes it so difficult to meet your omega 3 requirements by eating fish without ingesting heavy metals and toxins at the same time.

Experts believe that if fishing continues as it is now, there will be a collapse of the entire fish population by 2048. Fishing has a major impact on the sea and its ecosystem.
It is therefore important to only consume sustainable, traceable and high-quality fish oil.
Compared to improper fishing, algae oil can be produced sustainably and in an environmentally friendly way in algae tanks. This is because algae only need sunlight, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and phosphorus to grow. This means that the world's oceans are not additionally polluted.
Fish? No, thank you.
Vegetarians, vegans and people who do not like fish cannot cover their omega 3 requirements with fish. Although there are plant-based sources of omega 3 such as linseed oil or hemp oil, it is not easy to meet this requirement as they mainly contain the fatty acid ALA. ALA must first be converted by the body into DHA and EPA.
In order to supply these groups of people with omega 3, researchers began to simply omit the fish and start one step further down - directly with the fish food algae. Because even fish have to eat algae to produce enough omega 3. Algae are also naturally purer than fish, as they are lower down the food chain.
High-quality oil containing large amounts of DHA and EPA is obtained from the marine microalgae Schizochytrium sp. The algae oil is available as capsules or in liquid form.

Studies have investigated whether omega 3 from fish oil or algae oil are of the same high quality. According to the results, the two oils appear to be bio-equivalent.
Fish oil and algae oil are therefore both a good way to cover your omega 3 requirements. With fish oil, however, you should pay particular attention to the quality and check whether the product is sustainable. Algae oil can be produced more sustainably and is of the same quality as fish oil.
