Alongside back pain, headaches are one of the most common types of pain!

When your head hurts ...

A distinction is usually made between classic tension headaches, migraines and cluster headaches. Tension headaches are very common compared to the other types. However, more and more people are also affected by migraines. This is precisely why we are looking at this topic in more detail today, because ...

... we have found a natural remedy that can already help you prevent migraines. But more on that later.

Around 50% of the population suffer from occasional tension headaches and 10-12% already suffer from migraines.

What is a migraine?

Migraine sufferers experience moderate to severe headaches, which can have a lasting impact on their quality of life. A distinction is made between two types: with and without aura.

  • Migraine without aura: is the most common and occurs in around 80-85% of sufferers. Symptoms include pulsating or throbbing pain that can last for several hours or even days. Accompanying symptoms are usually an increased sensitivity to light and noise.
  • Migraine with aura: In addition to the symptoms just mentioned, migraine with aura is characterized by perceptual disturbances such as flashing lights and dizziness. Around 15-20% of patients are affected.

Both patient groups also often suffer from nausea, sleep disorders and mood swings.

Experts believe that migraine sufferers may have a hypersensitive central nervous system that reacts strongly to certain triggers. In addition, women are affected by migraines three times more often than men.

How are migraines triggered?

The exact causes are still largely unknown. Nevertheless, certain triggers are known. It is also important to know that these triggers do not cause migraines in everyone, but that everyone has to find out for themselves what triggers the symptoms.

Triggers include hormonal changes, stress, mental strain, lack of sleep, poor diet, environmental factors such as bright light or changes in the weather and certain medications. Experts also believe that high levels of inflammation, which affect the nerves in the brain and blood vessels, can have a triggering effect.

How can you treat migraines?

Option 1: Classic treatment

In conventional medicine, painkillers and triptan-based medication are usually prescribed for migraines. This purely symptomatic treatment can provide short-term relief, but can also have side effects such as dizziness or weakness. In addition, the risk of medication abuse is significantly increased in migraine patients.

Option 2: Holistic treatment

In natural medicine, the aim is to find the cause and thus the triggers of a migraine in order to resolve the symptoms in the long term and become permanently free of pain and migraines. For example, it can be helpful to keep a migraine diary in order to recognize your personal triggers and avoid them in the future. Make sure you eat a balanced diet and avoid nutritional deficiencies, as experts say these can make migraines worse. Also avoid unhealthy foods, alcohol, tobacco etc. and reduce stress regularly and get enough sleep.

According to experts, magnesium can help with migraine symptoms. In a 3-month study with sufferers (without aura), it was observed that the participants had significantly fewer migraine attacks after regular magnesium administration and that these were less severe overall. This suggests that magnesium is an effective means of preventing and treating migraines.

Studies have also shown that omega 3 and B vitamins can be effective in the prevention and treatment of migraines.

Conclusion

Migraine is a very common neurobiological headache disorder and has a massive impact on the quality of life of those affected, such as work, social activities and even their own family life.

Take your health into your own hands and find the cause of your migraine! Because headaches and migraines in particular should not become part of your everyday life. Even if you've been struggling with migraines for years, it's not too late to take holistic measures!
