What is superfood?

Superfoods are true nutrient bombs and provide the human body with a large amount of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins and minerals. With their high concentration of nutrients, they even surpass frequently recommended health foods such as broccoli, spinach, blueberries and pomegranates.

Superfoods can not only compete with our healthiest fruits and vegetables, but are even superior to them in terms of their effect on our organism. The consumption of superfoods can help people to reduce their risk of chronic diseases, lose weight and significantly improve their general well-being.

All superfoods have the following in common:

  • Superfood detoxifies the body
  • Superfood provides the body with sufficient energy and nutrients
  • Superfoods help to restore balance to your physical health

Why do we need superfoods?

Superfoods are an absolute must for health-conscious, modern people. This is mainly due to developments in our modern world. On the one hand, the human body is confronted with attacks from environmental toxins and toxins from the day it is born. Due to the human body's inability to bind and excrete these environmental toxins, the concentration of toxins in our bodies increases from year to year. Negative effects are not long in coming: our immune system is constantly on alert and exposed to permanent, severe stress. In addition, our cells are increasingly losing the ability to supply the body with sufficient energy. On the other hand, the systematic stress that many of us suffer from leads to an imbalanced hormone balance.

Superfoods can help to heal the body and support it in detoxification: thanks to their ability to bind environmental toxins and toxins, they help our body to excrete these toxins and reduce the concentration of toxins in our organism in the long term. They also supply our cells with important nutrients to boost cellular energy production and bring it back to a healthy level. Finally, they help to restore hormonal balance.

Superfoods not only seem to be the best and easiest way to cleanse, heal and rebalance our bodies, they are also easy to use, inexpensive, versatile and fast-acting.

The 12 ultimate superfoods

Here we present a range of top superfoods:

  • Goji berries
  • Acai berry
  • Maca root
  • Spirulina and chlorella algae
  • Barley grass
  • Wheatgrass
  • Chia seeds
  • Coconut oil
  • Cocoa
  • Aloe Vera
  • Flower pollen
  • Carob

Superfood no. 1: Goji berries

The goji berry originates from China and has been known there as a healing fruit for more than 6000 years. They are, so to speak, concentrated vitamin and nutrient bombs. Goji berries have made it to the top of the list of the most popular superfoods, particularly thanks to their antioxidant and anti-ageing effects. The small raisin-like berries are also ideal for incorporating into your daily diet. Goji berries are not only healthy, they also taste good! They can be perfectly combined with muesli or yoghurt in the morning.
The berries also make a good tea. Goji berries are a good substitute for raisins and can be used in various desserts. They are also ideal as a snack between meals.

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), they have been used for thousands of years for a wide range of medical purposes. For example, they are used to treat high blood pressure and high blood sugar levels, for eye problems and to support the immune system in general, as well as to prevent and treat cancer. Initial laboratory tests have shown that goji berries have antioxidant properties and that polysaccharides contained in the plant have a positive effect on the immune system.
Goji berries contain a variety of vitamins and minerals and are considered to be rich in nutrients. They are said to support fat burning and have a positive effect on skin health. Studies have shown that goji has positive properties for the liver and kidneys. It is rich in antioxidants, selenium, carotenoids and phenols.

Superfood no. 2: Acai berry

For a long time, the acai berry was considered an insider tip even among nutrition experts, even though this palm fruit has been the main ingredient in Brazilian fruit juices for some time. Acai is one of the strongest sources of natural vitamin C and is up to 30 times more effective than commercially available, synthetically produced vitamin C. Compared to synthetic vitamin C, natural vitamin C stands out due to its complex structure, which allows it to optimally support the human immune system, fight free radicals and help bind and excrete toxins.

The formation of free radicals cannot be prevented in the organism. They are formed as a result of a chemical reaction with oxygen. Causes for the formation of free radicals are, for example

  • UV rays
  • Air pollution
  • Conscientious lifestyle factors
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol consumption

These factors increase the occurrence of free radicals in the body. They are suspected of triggering diseases and are considered to be one of the main causes of visible ageing processes. The accumulation of free radicals can be counteracted by so-called radical scavengers. Free radical scavengers are also known as antioxidants.

Superfood no. 3: Maca

The superfood maca is a tuber that can be found in the highlands of South America. In powdered form, it is ideal for adding to smoothies, drinks, dishes and juices. However, heating should be avoided as this can cause maca to lose its effect. The taste is described as salty caramel or roasted oats and is strange at first. Smoothies, sweets and juices are ideal for mixing in the powder or capsules.

Advantages of Maca:

  • Vitamins in maca: Maca is rich in vitamins B, C and E. It contains a lot of calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and amino acids.
  • Maca and sexuality: Maca is particularly popular in promoting sexual function in men and women. It serves as a boost for their libido and increases stamina at the same time. In addition, it contributes to balance.

  • Women's health and mood with maca: Maca relieves menstrual problems and menopausal symptoms. It relieves cramps, pain, hot flushes, anxiety, mood swings and depression. However, maca should not be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

  • More energy with Maca: Within a few days of use, Maca will increase your energy levels. It is also known for endurance performance. Many athletes take Maca for peak performance. If you feel fatigue most of the time, maca can help you gather energy. Even just a small amount could have just what you need for an energy boost.

  • Maca for health: Maca helps your health in a number of ways. It provides iron and thus helps restore red blood cells, reducing the risk of anemia and cardiovascular disease. Maca keeps your bones and teeth healthy and enables faster wound healing. If you take Maca in combination with training, it can have a positive effect on muscle building. Caution is advised for people who suffer from liver problems and high blood pressure. They should discuss the intake with a doctor.

  • Maca for the skin: Many people take maca for skin problems, as it helps against acne and blemishes. Another benefit for the skin is that it reduces sensitivity. In extremely cold or hot temperatures, maca can help your skin withstand extreme stress. Recent laboratory studies have shown that maca stimulates the proliferation of fibroblasts (connective tissue cells) in the skin

  • Maca for more balance: If you suffer from anxiety, stress, depression or mood swings, maca can help you to alleviate the symptoms or even avoid these conditions. Some scientists have reported an increase in mental energy and concentration.

Superfood no. 4: Spirulina and chlorella - the super algae

Spirulina and chlorella are not only among the oldest foods in the world, but also among the smallest. Nevertheless, these microscopically small plants are the richest source of vitamins, minerals, trace elements and proteins that the world has to offer. For example, one kilogram of spirulina has the same nutrient content as 1,000 kilograms of selected vegetables. The power algae are also incredibly rich in protein (spirulina, for example, is said to have 12 times the protein content of beef) and contain large amounts of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll, the pigment that gives plants their green color, is known for its detox effect in humans. It helps to build new blood cells and supports the detoxification of diseased/damaged cells.

Spirulina and chlorella are green algae that are sold in powder, tablet or capsule form. With a high proportion of iron, fatty acids and amino acids, algae are an ideal source of protein, especially for vegetarians.

Spirulina contains vitamin B12 (essential for healthy body function), which is usually found mainly in animal products as bacteria. Spirulina is an all-round amazing all-rounder for the skin. The dark green color of spirulina is known to transport oxygen throughout the body, which eliminates toxins and free radicals. Free radicals attack the skin and make the skin look tired, flabby and dry. Cigarettes and stress are the main causes of free radicals. The antioxidant power of algae such as spirulina and chlorella can bind harmful free radicals and thus protect the skin from cell damage. The detoxifying effect of algae gives the skin new strength and energy. Shadows under the eyes disappear and dry eyes are regenerated. The detoxification treatment strengthens the body and tightens the skin.

Visible effects can occur after just a 3-week course of spirulina or chlorella algae.

Spirulina or chlorella can easily be taken with smoothies, water, juices and raw desserts.

Superfood no. 5: Barley grass (Hordeum vulgare)

Barley grass is the leaf of the barley plant and is naturally gluten-free. The early harvested grass in particular has a high nutritional value. Barley grass is characterized as a true super talent: It has a high alkaline value, contains chlorophyll, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, phosphorus, manganese, zinc, beta-carotene, B1, B2, B6, C and folic acid. Barley grass can be mixed into juices and smoothies in powder form. Alternatively, it is also available in capsule form.

Recipe idea:

  • 2 apples
  • 3 carrots
  • 4 stalks of celery
  • 2 tsp barley grass powder

Squeeze the apples, carrots and celery in a juicer and add 1-2 teaspoons of barley grass, and your power drink is ready! Best enjoyed fresh.

Superfood no. 6: Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass is also one of the most nutrient-rich foods on earth. It contains the perfect combination of all eight essential amino acids that cannot be produced by the human body. Wheatgrass is also an excellent source of iron and contains important enzymes, numerous vitamins and minerals. Wheatgrass is also rich in chlorophyll, which inhibits the formation of harmful bacteria in the human intestine and promotes the elimination of waste products and toxins from the intestine.

Superfood no. 7: Chia seeds

Chia seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, proteins and minerals such as iron, magnesium, zinc and calcium. The omega-3 fatty acids are important for protecting the upper layer of the skin, promoting wound healing and have anti-inflammatory properties. Chia seeds also contain a high proportion of fiber, which makes them suitable for aiding digestion. Fiber also slows down and reduces the feeling of hunger, which can lead to weight loss with long-term use of chia seeds.

A maximum of 15g of chia seeds should be consumed per day.

A study with chia seeds:

  • Study of 62 postmenopausal overweight women
  • (BMI ≥25kg/m²), non-smoker, not ill
  • Age: 49-75 years, study duration: 10 weeks
  • 3 groups: whole chia seeds (N=16)
    ground chia seeds (N=14)
    placebo (poppy seeds)(N=26)
  • The result of this study was that plasma lipid levels for α-linolenic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) increased significantly
  • Conclusion: Chia seeds are an important source of omega-3 fatty acids.

The superfood not only works on the inside, but can also have a health-promoting effect on the outside when used as a peeling:

Chia seed facial scrub

Test on a small area of skin first. Mix 1 teaspoon of ground chia seeds with 2 teaspoons of melted coconut oil and apply to damp skin. Massage in circular motions and rinse off the mask thoroughly. Coconut oil gives the skin the moisture it needs. Chia seeds cleanse the face deep into the pores and remove excess skin residue.

Superfood no. 8: Coconut oil

Coconut oil is suitable for baking recipes, smoothies and desserts. However, it can also be used as a spread.

Cooking with it is a good way to get the benefits of medium-chain fatty acids. However, it can also be consumed straight from the jar.

Coconut oil is ideal for heating in a pan because, unlike olive oil, it does not evaporate quickly and does not form bitter substances when heated.

Recipe idea: Preheat the oven to 180 °C and line a baking tray with baking paper. In a large bowl, combine the vegetables with the coconut oil, lemon juice and rosemary. Mix everything together by hand and then spread onto the baking tray. Season with salt and pepper and bake for 45-60 minutes. Depending on your taste, you can also take the tray out earlier. Quinoa, couscous or wholemeal pasta go well with this dish.

Superfood no. 9: Cocoa

Cacao is truly chocolate. Cacao is the origin of all chocolate. The cocoa tree has pods, each of which contains between 20 and 60 seeds. These seeds become cocoa beans and are the main ingredient in chocolate.

Cocoa powder is rich in antioxidants, magnesium and vitamin C. These increase blood flow and promote cell renewal and healing. Raw cocoa powder is ideal for adding to smoothies and desserts, tastes delicious in hot chocolate and is also a healthy alternative to conventional cocoa powder mixed with sugar.

As a result, the appearance of the skin should improve and people should feel healthier overall. Antioxidants - the radical scavengers - are contained in many foods, but acai is particularly rich in them.

Acai berry mask

Test on a small area of skin before applying the acai mask to the entire skin. Acai is effective in reducing acne and inflamed pustules.

For preparation:

  • 1/4 cup pureed strawberries
  • 1 teaspoon acai berry powder

Mix these 2 ingredients together and apply to clean but damp skin. Leave on for 5-10 minutes and rinse thoroughly.

Superfood no. 10: Aloe vera

Aloe vera is a sap plant. Its leaves are thick and fleshy, green to gray-green and have been used by cultures for centuries to heal burns, soothe ulcers, treat gastrointestinal upsets and soothe acne breakouts.

When the leaves of the aloe plant are cut open, a clear gel appears. This gel contains antioxidants such as beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E. These help to improve the skin's natural firmness and moisturize the skin.

Aloe vera is an amazing plant with an indefinable flavor, making it especially easy to add the juice to fruit smoothies.

Recipe idea: Aloe vera antioxidant smoothie

  • ¼ cup fresh aloe gel
  • 1½ cups frozen berries
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Mix all the ingredients in a blender until the consistency is smooth and creamy. Then serve fresh and eat immediately.

Superfood no. 11: Flower pollen

Another superfood on our list is pollen. Flower pollen has a long nutritional history: 5,000 years ago, the Chinese emperor Shen Nung investigated the life-prolonging and rejuvenating effects of flower pollen. Since then, they have been an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine. Flower pollen is not only the seed of flowering plants and therefore responsible for their reproduction, but is also full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, unsaturated fatty acids and a wide variety of enzymes.

Superfood no. 12: Carob

Carob is similar to cocoa - it is a legume that comes from the carob tree. The pod contains a sweet and edible pulp. It is sweeter than cocoa, but still has the same chocolaty taste. However, carob is caffeine-free and contains minerals, antioxidants and vitamins, everything needed for glowing skin. Carob seeds can be used in smoothies and desserts. Carob can always be used instead of cocoa or wherever sweetener is needed.

How best to incorporate superfoods into your everyday diet

You can consume superfoods in many different ways: Capsules, pellets or powder or whole berries are available from most foods. Capsules and pellets are particularly preferred if the taste of a particular superfood does not meet the consumer's expectations. However, as some superfoods also have a convincing taste and not just because of their health benefits, we also recommend taking them in powdered or natural form. This means that our superfoods can be added to all kinds of dishes: Mueslis, salads, smoothies, yogurt, etc. are excellent and can be further enhanced by adding superfoods!
