What is heartburn?

Heartburn is a very common and usually painful disorder of the stomach. Acidic stomach contents, which should normally remain in the stomach, overcome the sphincter muscle at the stomach entrance and enter the oesophagus. This leads to irritation and causes pain. The symptoms are particularly noticeable after eating, when bending over or lying down.

What causes heartburn?

  • Faulty function of the esophageal muscle: By contracting and opening, the muscle ensures that food passes from the oesophagus into the stomach. After this process, it normally blocks the way upwards for stomach acid. However, if it does not close completely, stomach acid returns to the oesophagus and causes irritation.
  • Diet: Large and sumptuous meals exert strong pressure on the diaphragm, causing stomach acid to move upwards. Also avoid foods high in fat, sugar, acid or caffeine as well as spicy foods if you suffer from heartburn. 
  • Lifestyle: Alcohol or tobacco consumption, obesity or poor posture exacerbate the symptoms.
  • Chronic stress: Prolonged stress has many negative health effects, including weight gain and digestive disorders.
  • Medication: For example, painkillers, blood pressure medication or antibiotics can trigger heartburn.
  • Pregnancy: The fetus exerts additional pressure on the esophageal valve, causing acid to be released into the esophagus.
  • Ageing: Many older people suffer from a lack of stomach acid and are therefore unable to fully digest the food they eat. This leads to inflammation of the gastric mucosa in the stomach, which in turn can trigger heartburn.
